New York Times Paywall: Will it Work?

The New York Times will begin charging for online content on March 28th. The paper announced its new business plan Thursday in a letter to its readers "It's an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in The Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform." That plan allows online readers access to 20 free articles a month. Any more -- and you will have to buy one of the digital news packages: Either $15 bucks a month for website and mobile phone apps, $20 bucks a month for web access and iPad app, or $35 bucks for all of it. The Economist looked at the business plan and said -- 'huh?!'" "Why would a paper want to punish its most loyal readers ... while letting casual, low-value readers snack on its content without paying?" But a New York Times reporter argues back, telling Business Insider -- this is the best solution to a problem that's not going away. "You're talking about it as pay-wall, and we're talking in the context of a meter. I know everyone says, oooh, this is just semantics, but its actually true. When you go to the newstand, you like to flip through the magazine or the newspaper - whatever it is - first before you buy it. I think that's in large part - sort of how we're approaching it ... |
